Annual Make Uncle Bob Happy Day
It's here again and I almost missed it! A day heralded with balloons, poetry, special phone calls, and accolades. What day is it? Annual Make Uncle Bob Happy Day, of course!
And what is the history behind this illustrious day? I'm glad you asked! Let's explore together!
It all started with a mouse. A computer mouse, that is. Bob M. (lovingly referred to as "Uncle Bob" by the younger GFA staff) had been using that simple mouse for years, but was deciding that a mouse with a scroll wheel might be useful. So he emailed the office HelpDesk.

Every Minute Counts!
"Do you have to be so intense?"
A friend of mine who works in missions was asked this question recently. His reply: "A soul is perishing every second. Yes - we have to make every minute count!"
I had to ask myself how I'm supposed to make every minute count -- especially on those days when I'm not directly doing missions-support work. What about cleaning the house and errands days? Does the speed of which I do the dishes really affect eternity? As I contemplated, a few thoughts wandered through... Haven't you been saying you don't have enough time to spend in prayer for missionaries and the mission field? That you would like to spend more time in prayer for the unreached? Using your time wisely gives you a few more minutes in the evening if you'll take advantage of them.
So I keep thinking about that. How many minutes do I spend doing other things? How can I use my time I do have to pray? (I've hung a world map in my bathroom and started praying systematically for countries. Then I look up that evening's country in my Operation World book.) And sometimes I'm more successful than others at using my time wisely and praying.

I Remember Forgetting That

Seeing friends
We're back on the road again! We spent the last 10 days at our "official address" in Georgia and then hit the road again - this time heading for the Dallas area. We'll be meeting with some potential ministry partners there, having a dentist appt (Dorinda), getting new tires on the van, and seeing GFA friends! We slipped into Nash, TX last night where some gracious and wonderful GFA friends hosted us at their home. It's so good to see them again!!! We'll spend a bit of time with them this morning and then we journey on! :)

Indian Believers
Missionary Murdered
I saw the news yesterday on Gospel for Asia's Facebook page. Pastor Ajit, a GFA-supported national missionary, was murdered in Assam, India last week.
Pastor Ajit led a church of 60 people in northeast India and on this particular day, he had headed to town to buy building supplies for the church's very first building. They were getting close to completing the building project and were looking forward to the dedication. You can read the full story here, but please be praying.
Pray for the believers in the church to stand firm in their faith and forgive the men that killed their pastor. Pray for the Lord to raise up more laborers for the harvest and a new pastor for that church. And pray for comfort for Pastor Ajit's wife and two small children.
Can you imagine if it was your pastor that was murdered? What would you pray for his family and for your church? Maybe that will help you know how to pray for Pastor Ajit.

Two states down...
It was a busy yesterday. We tracked down some critical LightSys information, packed the van, closed up the house, said good-bye to Grandmother (who may be with Jesus before we return), replaced 2 fuses for the van, fought with the inverter and started on our trip.
We're going to see how many state signs we can manage to capture during this journey, so Oklahoma was the first with the bustling town of Manchester (pop. 91) in the background.
Here we encountered a nice winter thunderstorm, complete with torrential rain, lightening, and enough hail to cover the ground and crunch under the tires. The white between us and the taillights in front of us is not just rain on the highway, but a covering of 1" hail. You can't see it well in the photo, but here tries...
And then, we pulled in to dear, old Texas. Where we were reminded by the big green sign to "Drive friendly, the Texas way." (Jen S., I think of you every time I drive by that sign...)
Today has been busy tracking down Kardia bugs, getting teeth worked on, having lunch with a couple wonderful friends, seeing the J-Fam again, and hugging a few necks at the GFA office. So thankful for a quiet house while we're here so we can be programming-focused during the day. Thanks, Fred and Luci!
Funny story from today: I was at the GFA office and used the lobby phone to call a coworker who could get me what I needed from a secured storage area.

Changes - By God's Direction and Grace
My newsletters finally got sent out and most of my supporters will get them in the next two days. I think this newsletter was one of the hardest ones to write because of the feeling and emotions behind it - emotions of joy in what God is doing and emotions of change...
As the newsletter shares with my supporters, September 30th will be my last day serving with Gospel for Asia. With my leaders' blessings, I am transitioning over to LightSys - Greg's ministry - to serve alongside him in the call the Lord has given us.
Things that will change:
Could you pray for me this week? It's a little bit of a busy and emotional week - wrapping up 7 years of office work, packing to move, trying to address and send out wedding invitations...
I would so appreciate it! Thank you!

- I'm leaving Dallas and moving to Kansas for the six weeks before the wedding.
- I'll be serving alongside Greg in the ministry of LightSys. We're not yet sure where long term headquarters will be, but we'll probably be in the KS area for the short-term.
- Greg and I will still be serving as support-based missionaries.
- We are still called to reach the lost world with the gospel of Christ.
- Similar to the computer support I was providing for GFA, we'll still be doing computer support for a variety of mission organizations. (Helping take care of their computer and training needs so they can do the mission work they need to do.)
Could you pray for me this week? It's a little bit of a busy and emotional week - wrapping up 7 years of office work, packing to move, trying to address and send out wedding invitations...

Sleepy Morning
I'm at the office early this morning, hoping to get some work done before the office gets busy. I had hoped to walk to work and enjoy the cool of the morn (it's 72 here this morning. Cool(er) mornings - finally!), but this little sleepyhead didn't wake up in time. :P
I'm hoping to get some pictures uploaded soon... pictures of me and my adorable niece that was born in August, pictures of the bridal shower that my GFA family threw for me, pictures of Greg (of course...). We'll see what I get done...
Prayer items: I need to get my newsletter written this week. Lots of important updates and I need your prayers as I put it together. Pray for "DonorStudio" training that is going on this week at the office for some of our staff. And pray that I get lots of communicating and documenting done this week. :)
I praise God for you guys!

Happy Anniversary!
GFA celebrated it's 30th anniversary last week, so tonight's all-night prayer meeting is focusing on God's faithfulness! Lots of fun stories from the early days of the ministry and lots of fun faithfulness to look forward too!
Meanwhile, the J-Fam's faithful van battery died, so I ferried them to and from prayer meeting. We're back at their house and we just finished getting their QuickTime set up so J-Fam Mom can watch prayer meeting while the boys are in bed.

GFA Staff Retreat
Two weekends ago was GFA's staff retreat and the GFA families retreated to a Christian campground/retreat center near Huntsville, TX for three days of rest, laughter, and fellowship. We had a "bonfire" (in quotes because of the small size of the said fire) on Saturday night with an open time of sharing of things the Lord has been teaching us or things we are grateful for. It was such a blessing to me to hear from others and to also have an opportunity to share how much the GFA family had meant to me and to encourage the newer staff and students/interns to deliberately plug themselves into the fellowship as well. I'm convinced that the enemy will do almost anything to bring feelings of disunity or disconnectedness or loneliness. If he can divide us as Christians, he can slow the furtherance of the Gospel.

Final Count - 37 supporters, 2 churches, 1 deer
I made it back safely from my 10 days support trip - glad to have seen so many of you and glad to be back with my GFA family as well.
The mission of my trip: visit those families in KS and OK who have been prayerfully and financially supporting me over the last six years as I served here at GFA. Share stories from the mission field and from my life with them, encourage them, fellowship with them, and find out how I can be praying for them and for their families.
The start of my trip was Friday, March 20th, when I left Dallas and headed for Hydro, Oklahoma. From there, I stopped by Okeene and Meno in Oklahoma and started up into Kansas. From there, I visited Coldwater, Medicine Lodge (where my sister L. joined me for the trip), Kingman, Wichita, Newton, Sterling, Partridge, Yoder, Hutchinson, Inman, McPherson, Lindsborg, Concordia, Olsburg (where I waited out the snow storm), Manhattan, Lawrence, Reading, Harper, Coldwater, and finally - Anthony.
I visited 37 supporter families and 2 supporting churches in 32 stops and traveled over 1900 miles in my little Toyota Corolla. Overall: Mission Accomplished!
My trip back to TX was a little delayed. I was about 30 miles out of Anthony on Wednesday evening (April 1), heading back to Dallas, when my car met a cute little deer. The little deer didn't survive. My car suffered injuries and is now at the West Street Body Shop and Fender Repair in Anthony, KS. I'm now driving a green mini-van. (Thanks for the loan, Mom and Dad!)
Praises: the Lord's grace in the planning, the Lord's safety during travels, costs covered for the trip, fun times with my sister L., hospitality and open guest rooms from so many people along the route! And you! I praise God for you! Thank you so much for your prayers and support! I would not be here without you.

Fixing combines
I've been busy the last couple minutes fixing the header on the John Deere 9750 combine. The header kept coming detached and then the reel fell off the header and broke into two pieces. So I snapped it back together again and put it back in place again. (Dad, do 9750s still have quick-tatch feeder housing? I think this one does...) I returned the combine to its driver Josiah with a gentle reminder to push the combine gently on the carpet. He liked setting Gooey on top and driving it around.
I've just finished up my weekly report to my coordinator and I'm getting ready to join the rest of the GFA family for pizza and fellowship and a movie. And then take the J-Fam boys home to bed so their parents can have an evening out.
I'm so thankful for where God has placed me right now. Thanks for all your prayers and support.

It's Friday Night Prayer Again!
It's been a busy week, so I'm a little bit tired at this Friday Night Prayer. We're taking a stretch/food break at the moment, so I stopped by my computer to print off IT Prayer Requests for a 12:30 prayer segment. We're asking for prayer for some database changes, new firewall deployment, and STAFF! We need full-time helpdesk and desktop staff. I praise God that we don't have to figure life out on our own, but we can pray and ask him and he answers!
We got an updated from the team at NRB this evening. The booth is almost all set up and ready for the conference to start - praise God! But the news also came in that Gen is still pretty sick (see previous post). She was diagnosed with bronchitis on Tuesday evening, but went ahead and traveled with the team on Wednesday. Keep praying for her healing.
It was also really neat at prayer meeting since some of our staff have just returned from a trip to India. One of the group leaders was sharing about how her time visit the leprosy ministry impacted her in an unshakeable way. Maybe I'll snag one of her photos to post here soon.
I've got an empty house at the moment, but the J-Fam returns on Sunday. I'll be so glad to see them. Well, after I get the house cleaned... :)

Tomorrow's To-Do List
Tonight's songs at prayer meeting were all about God's faithfulness. I needed that. I think tomorrow's going to be busy. I was busy during the ice storm catching up on sleep. Perhaps I should have been working on some of this instead...

- Final check of new student logins and permissions

- Find key arriving in mail for potential housing rental for Gen and me
- Having found key, call landlord and see if then is a good time to visit the rental
- Visit the rental.
- Make a decision on the rental
- Do initial login and training for new students (1:00 pm)
- Arrange for moving truck
- Move furniture from old house garage into new house garage (can be done Friday AM if need be)
- Turn off utilities at old house
- Chiropractor appointment
- Parents and L. arrive for visit.
- Oh... and regular helpdesk responsibilities.

Ice Storm Comfort
The promised ice storm which shut the office down yesterday finally came through last night about 8:00 or so. By 11pm, the sidewalks and ground were white with sleet and the roads were getting messy. The sidewalks got slick about 7pm. I know. L., you weren't the only one to have a "touchdown" yesterday!
The office is closed until noon today as the streets are frozen over. Prayer meeting has been moved from last night to tonight. It's cold outside (umm... except compared to Anthony where it's 7 degrees and my dad is delivering miles of city mail on foot today).
So... I'm going to go check out the gfa.org update on bicycles for missionaries and then head back to my papasan to cuddle with a good book and my grandmother's quilt. Yay for flannels PJs and warm houses!

Tueday Night Prayer
I really enjoyed last night's prayer meeting, exhausted though I was. Really enjoyed. Hearing the leaders' hearts for GFA and the beginning reports of the 2008 fruit from the mission field reminded me of why I came to GFA six years ago. I sat there, challenged, as John praised God for the growth in the ministry this year and asked us to pray for an even greater increase next year.
"It's not so we can have some really cool annual report. It's so we can train more workers and we can drill more Jesus Wells and help more kids and send more missionaries and do more things that are going to see 700 million people reached with the Gospel.
I'm convinced that the Lord loves the people of Asia. And as long as it's true that every time my heart beats, somebody plunges into hell without ever hearing our Savior's name and if it's true that he left the glories of heaven to come to earth to seek and to save that which was lost, then I know that he'll respond [to our prayers]."
To you, my readers: we have the privilege of laboring to reach the half of the world that has never heard the name of Jesus. Thank you for laboring alongside me with your prayers and support!

Preparing to fly
Graduation was tonight for Jes and Cas and now they're busy packing their bags. Jes has an early morning flight out and Cas will also be leaving early to start the drive back to north MI. (Her mother is traveling with her, but you can still pray for safety as they travel through the snow storms.)
Me? I just finished my weekly IT report and am now finishing up Helpdesk tickets. Tomorrow I'll finish Christmas shopping, pack, sign newsletters, and maybe even play Cricket!
I'm also really excited about my Frisco church and the GFA Christmas Catalog. Pastor John challenged the church in his weekly to pitch in this weekend and raise the money to buy a house for a family in India who has lost everything in a natural disaster. Launa and Pastor John - you're amazing! Thanks so much for your help in sharing this opportunity with the church. I can't even tell you the extent of the lives that will be changed in Asia because of this!

Pastor John challenged the church in his weekly to pitch in this weekend and raise the money to buy a house for a family in India who has lost everything in a natural disaster. Launa and Pastor John - you're amazing! Thanks so much for your help in sharing this opportunity with the church. I can't even tell you the extent of the lives that will be changed in Asia because of this!

Busy Saturday
We finished up prayer meeting last night/this morning and went to bed about 4:30. Got a good four hours of sleep before the exterminator came to spray the house for bugs. We didn't do the bedrooms. Packed a few boxes, cleaned stuff out of the chill room closet, mailed a long overdue package to Me and another one to Sheri. I ran errands and stopped by the office where System Admin and Phone Vendor were duking it out with the phone server. When I left, the phone server was winning, but Phone Vendor was making a comeback. Kind of like Missouri and OU. or not. Phone Vendor beat the phone server. Despite an entire quarter left to go, Missouri is not going to beat OU. Sadly.
I went to church tonight. I don't go to Saturday evening service very often, so my body clock was a little mixed up. Hope Fellowship passed out the Christmas Catalogs last week while I was in KS, so everyone was talking about them this week. Quote one lady, "We always do a gift exchange with our life group, but we decided that the group isn't going to do that this year. We're going to get something from the Gift Catalog instead."
Then I stopped by Target. Except I didn't make it there. Linens 'n' Things was going out of business. So I helped them get rid of their stock. Too bad their nice saucepans were still $50, even on 40% off!
It's my brother's 20th birthday today. I called him. He sent me to voicemail. Happy Birthday anyway, little bro!
