Six new interns...

We did it! This afternoon from 1-2:30, I was introducing our six new interns to the GFA computer system. We covered software training basics, file sharing, email, password protocol, and much much more. I think I helped overwhelm them. :) We got all their passwords changed and they'll be starting at their desks tomorrow morning. Their department coordinators are so excited to have additional staff!

I have more training tomorrow morning for another new staff person. Most of this afternoon was spent on the phone working with the Center for Nonprofit Management in preparation for more staff training next week on Outlook and Excel.

It's a lot of training, but it's fun doing what I was called here to do.

On a more sober note - the US is coming up on the one year anniversary of Katrina. With other high-priority news, few people realize that India has been hit this month by the worst monsoon in recorded history with over 1000 dead, millions homeless, and over 15,000 villages destroyed.

From the GFA website: "Gujarat is one of the worst-hit states. In the city of Surat, you have more than 400 dead, 6 million homeless, phone lines are gone and 270 villages are completely cut off."

Pray for the missionaries and pastors who are doing compassion work in those areas. Pray for the hundreds of churches/church plants that are affected and the believers there.

Kids and ministry

On a personal note, I spent this weekend kidsitting four youngsters in one of our staff families. Kyle is one of our GFA staff speakers (traveling to share about GFA with churches across the US) and had a meeting Haysville, KS on Sunday. He was driving there and his wife was able to accompany him. The four kids (ages 12, 10, 6, 4) and I had a wonderful time at the McDonald's playplace, the library, Auntie Candy's pool... It was a blessing to be able to bless them. Kyle and his wife don't get away just the two of them very often. (It was also a blessing to get Russell Stover's chocolate as payment for the weekend. :)

It was interesting to hear about one conversation Kyle and his wife had in Wichita. Kyle's wife has special dietary needs, so they were looking for a restauant that served organic food. "Well," said one native Wichitan, "if you head west out of town some hours, you'll come to Denver. They probably have something there. Or if you head south out of town, you'll eventually come to Dallas. Those two are probably your closest bets."

Interns and Training

The 2006-07 Road to Reality Interns arrived on Saturday. NN and SE are the GFA staff/discipleship team members living with the girls and guys houses this year. The six new interns are going through orientation time right now.

Wednesday, I get to help them all get logged into their computer accounts and train them on using our computer system. We're also getting ready for computer training next Tuesday to train them on using Microsoft Outlook and Excel.

One helpdesk call today - GFA staff member Allen was wanting to know how to make an Outlook calendar show only some of his appointments. Within moments, we had defined categories and created a custom view that would answer his needs.

Empowering others to use technology more effectively. Planting churches. That's what we're about.

Trusting?

Sometimes when I struggle, I think... it's not that I don't trust God, it's more that I don't trust myself to hear God.

Belated update

My sympathies go out to my KS supporters for my total lack of blog posting. I know...some of you GFA staff who like to read it are missing it too, but you know a good chunk of what is going on.

Perhaps we'll start a slow and steady update. My right now status: the 05-06 internship has ended, the 06-07 internship starts one week from today. You can pray for SE - a roommate of mine from last year. She's the one who will be living with the girl interns during this next year instead of me.

What am I doing? Currently I'm living out of suitcases at my cousin's home and spending some time seeking the Lord. I'll continue to do computer helpdesk and software training at GFA, but I won't be part of the Intern Discipleship Team this coming year.

One joy from today: being invited to a staff family's home for supper with a few close friends and finding out it was a suprise birthday party.
